BASi was founded in 1974 as a specialized instrument company supporting academic scientists with a strong focus on neuroscience and analytical chemistry. Over the years, BASi became increasingly involved in biology, understanding how potential new drugs interact in mammalian species, from mice to humans. A variety of "-ologies" became a focus, including pharmacology, toxicology, psychology, pathology and cardiology. As outsourcing became a viable option for pharmaceutical companies, BASi became as much a service firm as a manufacturer. Today, 70% of sales are from contract research services and 30% from products. BASi has a unique partnership with Purdue University and is a preferred provider to several major pharmaceutical companies. The company has therapeutic area concentrations in central nervous system diseases, diabetes, antibiotics and antiviral compounds.
Currently BASi has a skilled staff of over 350 people, 80% of whom have science degrees and 50 with Ph.D. or DVM degrees. The company is headquartered in West Lafayette, Indiana and has laboratories in Mount Vernon, Indiana, McMinnville, Oregon, Baltimore, Maryland and in the United Kingdom.
BASi is a public company (BASI on Nasdaq) with an active acquisition program in the USA and Europe, and regularly explores licensing opportunities for new products.
